What is Tylan Soluble Powder and What is it Used For

Tylan Soluble Powder is an antibiotic compound originally introduced for treatment of livestock, such as poultry (more on that later). It is now widely used for its effectiveness in treating gastrointestinal disorders in dogs which may include indigestion, peptic ulcers, acid reflux, abdominal pain syndrome, colitis and bloating, to name a few.

A lot of these aren’t really a disease themselves but they’re actually symptoms or signs of a bacterial infection. Tons of bacteria are capable of causing gastrointestinal problems. And let’s not forget that our pets and most animals always have something in their mouth, which means they’re constantly introducing sources of bacterial infections. Good thing you have Elanco Tylan Soluble Powder which is a powerful antibiotic.

You won’t need any of that symptomatic treatment that only relieves the discomfort and pain temporarily. Tylan Soluble Powder fights the source of the problem, which is the bacteria, making sure that the symptoms go away once and for all.

Benefits of Tylan Soluble Powder

Tylan Powder is a very effective Tear Stain remover for dogs. We will be discussing in more detail the benefits of this Tylosin based product below.

Benefits of Tylosin

Treats Eye Stain Discoloration

Tylan Soluble Powder, also known as Tylosin, is also used to treat eye stain discoloration in dog breeds with lighter coats. It works to help maintain an even, fine coat and keeping your pooch’s tear ducts free and clear.

What Causes Eye Stain Discoloration

Eye Stain discoloration in dogs

This stain is due to excessive tearing which can caused by a number of things. Some dogs suffer from excessive tearing due to an anatomical defect that has been passed down through generations of dogs.

This defect appeared when dogs evolved from their common ancestor, the wolves. Yes, that’s right. Your furry best friend’s ancestors were wolves. When wolves evolved into dogs, their eyes protruded outwards, their noses and snouts became longer, and as a result, their tear ducts became crooked and narrower. All of this resulted in congenital overactive tear ducts. Then, excessive tearing forms a medium that is simply ripe for bacteria to grow, which in turn, cause even more tearing.

That’s where Elanco Tylan Soluble Powder comes in. It gets rid of these pesky bacteria. It’s also useful in certain cases where the excessive tearing isn’t because of an anatomical defect, but because of a bacterial infection in the first place. Basically, no matter what’s causing your dog’s stain, Elanco Tylan Soluble Powder will get rid of it for you.

How Does Tylan Soluble Powder Work

So how does Tylan Soluble Powder work? Well, it’s an antibiotic, which means it fights bacteria that are causing your problem. But here’s the catch. You see, most antibiotics are either “bactericidal”, meaning they kill bacteria, or “bacteriostatic”, meaning they prevent bacteria from reproducing until the immune system kills them off. Very few antibiotics can work in both ways at the same time. But Tylan Soluble Powder can.

It works by inhibiting bacterial reproduction and eliminating colonies of bacteria, finally giving your dog that necessary immune boost. This boost is important to ward off future bacterial infections. In other words, it works as both treatment and prophylaxis. It gets rid of the disease and at the same time strengths the immune system against future diseases. Talk about complete protection!

Are there Any Side Effects of Tylan Powder

Tylan Soluble Powder and most forms and derivatives of Tylan have no known side effects, making this the easiest and most fool-proof treatment for pet GI ailments. That’s actually something that makes Elanco Tylan Soluble Powder very unique because most antibiotics come with several side effects, whether in humans or in animals. These side effects can be dangerous, or even fatal, while some can be just unpleasant, like nausea or diarrhea. Luckily, your animal won’t have to put up with the pesky side effects because Elanco Tylan Soluble Powder is side effect-free.

Contact Your Vet Before Use

That being said, don’t forget the golden rule: always check with your vet before giving your animal any kind of medication. Why? Well, not because Tylan Soluble Powder is dangerous or anything, it’s actually perfectly safe, even from side effects. However, Elanco Tylan Soluble Powder is still a form of medication and you never know how your animal’s body is going to react.

Some (very few) animals are allergic to certain types of antibiotics so just to be on the safe side, consult your vet or seek professional advice before administering Elanco Tylan Soluble Powder or any kind of new product, for that matter. Your vet will be able to check for any reactions that can potentially occur due to allergies or other contraindications. They know a lot, trust me. After all, it’s better to be on the safe side when we’re dealing with our furry friends, right?

Features of Elanco Tylan Soluble Powder

Tylan Soluble Powder is super convenient. Its solubility in water means that it can be administered via your pet’s typical diet. You won’t have to find special means for dissolving it in food and drink because it’ll blend in just like water. However, unlike water, it does have a somewhat unpleasant flavor, so your best bet would be administration through soft gel caps or even intravenously. But don’t worry, it won’t be that bad because the amount you add per feed is actually quite small, in milligrams, so it won’t affect the flavor that much.

Elanco Tylan Soluble Powder’s dosage is typically 5-10 milligrams per pound, administered twice daily over six weeks. The dose is pretty simply but there’s one mistake that people quite commonly make when administering Tylan Soluble Powder. As soon as they see their animal or pet getting better, they stop giving them the medicine.

Whether out of laziness, or because they want to store the remaining amount for another time. It’s completely wrong to do. Why? Because, when it comes to medicine and especially, antibiotics, the golden rule is to always finish the entire course of treatment.

If it says 6 weeks, then you should stick to 6 weeks. This is because with powerful antibiotics like Tylan Soluble Powder, bacterial resistance can occur. What does that mean? Put simply, it means that bacteria start to get smarter and learn how to fight the antibiotic. This means the next time you use Elanco Tylan Soluble Powder, it might not be effective. So be smarter than those bacteria. Stick to the right dose, which includes the right duration, as well.

  2. If my dog is 35 lbs. How much of the 100mg powder do I give? Sort of doesn’t make sense using the powder. I know 100mg is not a lot at all but what is the ratio of the powder if 100mg is a teaspoon from the stuff in the container? If the dog is 35 lbs, it would be something like 350 mg? or 3.5 t?

    • The powder is in grams not milligrams. So if your dog is 35 lbs you would never give 3.5 tsps. They say 1 tsp is about 2.7- 2.5 grams so that’s 2700- 2500 mgs per tsp. Your vet will prescribe a certain amount of MILLIGRAMS PER KILOGRAM OF YOUR DOGS WEIGHT. So if your dog is 35lbs that’s really close to say 16 kg. Most vets prescribe like 10mg per kg so that’s 160Milligrams. Like 1/16 of a teaspoon
